Undergrad visa interview

My interview was at 8:30 am at mumbai consulate. Reached the vfs office at 7:45 am and waited for a few mins to get inside. Just then, it started to rain and the officer let everybody in the 8:30 slot inside. we were frisked at the gate, put our luggage in the locker and went inside to watch tv in the waiting lounge.

Its 8:15 now and still no call for the 8:30 batch. We are all worried and I grabbed a tea to get out of tension. no one called us till 8:45. then two of us went to the security guard to enquire as to what was going on. He sent an official inside who announced that the consulate was running an hour late and what we needed to wait. Finally, at 8:50 came the much awaited call for the 8:30 batch to reach to the VFS bus. We rushed out and got inside the bus. In five minutes, we were at the consulate and I was shocked to see the longest waiting line I've ever seen. It spanned to almost 4 blocks and I mentally collapsed thinking that I'll have to join the line at the end and wait in the rain. But for some unknown reason, the people from the bus were taken straight near the gate and let inside in batches of 5 or 6. I got inside after about 10 minutes of waiting and was directed to the full body and baggage frisking. They made me take off my belt and I had to hold my pants to prevent them from falling. After completing the formalities and getting the wooden token, I entered the consulate building and was about to que up for getting my token number when a nice young Indian gentleman told me to gather myself in one corner (probably cause I was holding my pants with one hand and my bag with another). I did so and then go in line to receive my token number.

Happily I accepted token number 143 (he he he) and went in line for the finger printing and completed formalities there. I was told to wait in the main area and listen intently for my token number to be called. I had read on Orkut and other internet sites that we needed to wait for hours at the waiting area before our turn came.

So I put my feet up and relaxed. I was about to open my file just to memorize the figures once again when I heard someone call "Token numbers 143, ___, ___, ___, ___ to window number 13!" I was shocked, surprised and taken aback. But still, I got up as fast as I could and reached window 13 first. There came another shock. My visa officer was hardly 24 or 25 years old! I thought this might make things harder for me. He called me in and then told me to wait. He was so tall that he hardly fit in his chair. So he took 1 minute or so to adjust himself on the chair. Finally, this is how my interview went:

VO: Good morning young man!
Me: Good morning sir, how are you?

VO: So.. you going to Stony Brook?
Me: Yes sir.

VO: Pass me that pink token
Me: (did so) Here sir

VO: So where did you do your undergraduate?
Me: Sir im going to do my undergraduate. I am still only a 12th graduate.

VO: Oh! Fine. Who's going to sponsor you?
Me: My mother and my uncle.

VO: What does your father do?
Me: My father died two years back

VO: Oh… im sorry. What do your mother and uncle do?
Me: Sir my mother is in the share market business and my uncle is an advocate in the state high court.

VO: Ok… Do you have enough savings for your education?
Me: Yes sir

VO: Can I see your summary?
Me: Would you like to see my summary? (That was damn stupid) (Passed the summary that I had prepared in a café the previous night)

VO: Oh… this is something that you have prepared. Tell me how much saving do you have.
Me: Sure sir.. we have 12 and a half lacs in the savings bank account and another 11 and a half lacs in the fixed deposits.

VO: Do you have the FDs?
Me: Sure sir.. but they are in bits and pieces. We did it to save tax. Do you wanna have a look?

VO: Yeah.
Me: ( Took out a fat bundle of postal FDs and passed to him. He flipped through them and moved a finger on my summary. Then passed all of those back).

VO: What again does your uncle do?
Me: Sir he's an advocate with the state high court

VO: Do you think you'll be able to do it
Me: Yes sir. Im sure
